Although it is very small in size, it presents quite significant differences in landscape; the sides that look towards the Gulf are covered in Mediterranean vegetation, while those that look towards the sea are characterised by high cliffs overlooking the water in which numerous caves open up. In particular, the 'Grotta Azzurra', which can also be visited by boat, and the 'Grotta dei Colombi', which, on the other hand, can only be reached by means of a rope lowered from the cliff.
The latter is of great historical importance since fossil bones of Pleistocene animals, such as chamois and snowy owl, have been found inside it, and, above all, remains of human burials that bear witness to the stable presence of man at least five thousand years ago.
For those who love trekking, there is the possibility of a tour of Palmaria in just under three hours: the path starts from Terrizzo and winds its way through fragrant myrtle and broom plants, touching the Pozzale inlet as far as Punta Carlo Alberto; just in front stands out with its unmistakable silhouette the small Church of San Pietro.
The island is connected to the mainland all year round by a municipal service from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., while during the summer period there are continuous runs.
Since 1997, the island, together with the other islands of Tino and Tinetto, Porto Venere and the Cinque Terre, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
